Clean Your Induction Cooktop in These Four Easy Steps

!±8± Clean Your Induction Cooktop in These Four Easy Steps

Induction cooktops combine energy efficiency with a chic, ultra-modern look. Induction technology does not use traditional thermal technology, such as a gas flame or electric current. Induction cooktops generate heat via a magnetic field that reacts to the metal in a pan. Heat is only generated when the cooking pan is in contact with the cooking surface. Because they are made of glass, special precautions need to be taken when cleaning the cooktop surface. It is important to use only cleaners and cleaning pads specially designed to clean glassor ceramic surfaces.

Step 1. Clean the cooktop each day by applying a few drops of ceramic cooktop cleaner to the cooktop surface. The owner's manual provided with your cooktop may recommend specific manufacturers' products. Step 2. Using a cleaning pad or paper towel designed specifically for glass cooktops, spray the cleaner on the cooktop surface. Remove the cleaner from the surface with a dry paper towel. Step 3. For spills and burned-on residue, let the cooktop surface cool first before cleaning. Spray the ceramic cooktop cleaner directly on the spill or residue. Use a ceramic cooktop cleaning pad and scrub the area clean. Repeat as necessary until the residue is gone. Step 4. For heavily burned on gunk, use a scraper designed for cleaning a glass cooktop. Again, wait for the surface to cool completely before attempting to scrape off the residue. Apply pressure to scrape off the residue as needed. Then use the ceramic cooktop cleaner and cleaning pad to remove remaining residue, repeating as necessary.

With proper care, your induction cooktop should look great for as long as you own your home.

Electric Space Heater Reviews

!±8± Electric Space Heater Reviews

The portable space heaters reviewed in this article are electric radiant or convection space heaters, cost less than 0, and offer a maximum heat output of 1500 watts. All of the following space heater suggestions are rated an average minimum of 4 out of 5 stars by consumer reviewers.

Radiant heaters work like the sun by warming people and objects. Radiant heaters without fans are not designed to heat an entire room, but excel at providing instant heat for one or two people.

Two examples of radiant heaters without fans are radiant heat panels and parabolic heaters. Radiant heat panels are constructed with the heating element embedded in the panel. By virtue of their simplicity, they are safe, reliable and maintenance free.

The Presto Parabolic Heat Dish is a cost effective choice for workshops or garages when you want to heat just you and not the entire building. The Cozy Legs radiant heat panel, with only 100 watts of heat output is by no means a whole room heater, but performs admirably when installed under a desk or hung on the wall to warm a bird cage.

The next four categories of radiant heaters are equipped with fans to provide whole room heat.

Quartz Infrared Heaters
Quartz infrared heaters can cost as little as , or as much as 0 for the SunTwin or EdenPure heaters. The SunTwin brand features copper heat exchangers for consistent, non drying heat; a child and pet friendly cool to the touch exterior, fan assisted heat for larger spaces, and a lifetime washable filter.

The less expensive Marvin 1500 watt quartz heater uses replaceable quartz tubes in front of a reflector and a fan to project whole room heat. Quartz heating elements reduce positive ions in the air and consume very little oxygen. Reviews say this heater works extremely well. The security locked grill swings out for easy quartz tube replacement. Replacement tubes are readily available for .99 each.

Ceramic Heaters

Ceramic heaters come in a wide variety of models: fixed, tower, oscillating and pedestal. One of the most popular and inexpensive of these is the Honeywell HZ-315. Weighing in at only 3.3 pounds, it's the mighty mite of space heaters capable of quickly heating small to mid-sized rooms.

A specialized version of the ceramic heater is the remote controlled Soleus Air MS-20A. The cool to the touch exterior, even heat, and wall mounting feature make it a favorite for nurseries.

Electric Fireplaces
What are they? Expensive space heaters or a piece of furniture that also keeps you warm? Definitely a piece of furniture. If you went crazy and spent 00 on an electric fireplace (they're out there), it still won't heat your room any better than the 9 model.

Electric Stoves
Similar to the electric fireplace, an electric stove is a radiant, fan assisted space heater installed in a decorative housing. The most popular model by far with consumers is the Dimplex CS3311 compact electric stove.

Need Heat Fast? Consider the Versatile Ceramic Space Heater

!±8± Need Heat Fast? Consider the Versatile Ceramic Space Heater

Quick, safe and direct are three words that describe the advantages of an electric ceramic space heater. Plug it in for fast directed heat to a specific area of your room - ideal for focusing warmth on grandma or baby Joey when mom, dad and others are comfy with the ambient temperature. Light in weight and easily moved, a ceramic space heater warms in the same way as standing in the sunshine.

What's Special about Ceramic Electric Space Heaters?

Electrical energy is used to heat ceramic plates built into the unit. The plates in turn heat aluminum baffles that radiate the heat in the direction desired. A major advantage of this type of heating is that the temperature is not hot enough to ignite paper or other flammables. Touching the casing does not result in a burn, making them much safer than oil-filled or infrared designs for use in the kids' bedrooms and playrooms. Moreover they will automatically turn off if accidentally tipped. And like most modern electric space heaters, they are equipped with thermostats. Some units offer remote control temperature settings.

Bells and Whistles Add Utility to Ceramic Room Heaters

Remote temperature control is but one of the many features that add utility to an electric ceramic room heater. And manufacturers have exhibited creativity in creating a wide range of designs and features that increase the effectiveness of these heaters. Slim pedestal and column configurations, cleverly configured vase designs mounted in a metal scrollwork base, and easily moved utility or workplace models are but a few of the choices available to fit your décor and special space heating requirements.

Useful options include:

Oscillating models to direct heat to a broader area Cylconic ceramic heaters designed to circulate air throughout an entire room Auto-adjustable heat output that responds to room temperature changes Humidifier-equipped ceramic heaters that add healthful moisture to dry winter air Fresh air ionizers for a more comfortable environment On-off timers and automatic overheat protection

Other Uses for Portable Ceramic Heaters

Smart homeowners save on central heating costs by turning off the heat in unused or seldom used rooms such as guest bedrooms and bathrooms. When company comes to call a timer and thermostatically controlled portable ceramic heater quickly and efficiently provides welcoming warmth to these areas. If you finish off attics, basements or add rooms to your home ceramic room heaters can save a pile of money vs. extending the central heating system into such areas.

Tips to Safe Ceramic Heater Operation

Today's compact ceramic heaters meet strict codes including auto shutoff if tipped. While they are designed to minimize the danger of burns, exercise caution when placing them in areas where children are at play.

If more than one heater is used in a room, it is best that each operates off a different circuit. And remember never to use an extension cord with any electric space heater.

Going Shopping

Frankly I was amazed at the wide range of choices available in ceramic space heaters. That's why I advise homeowners considering these as a supplement to central heating to look for a space heater specialist such as Heater Store Online to get an idea of the many varieties and sizes of ceramic space heaters that are available. Their online catalog provides product details that may be difficult to obtain from sales personnel in big box stores.

Best Whole Room Space Heaters

!±8± Best Whole Room Space Heaters

Many space heaters are advertised as "whole room heaters" - but exactly how big is a whole room? One possible answer can be found in the Vornado heater manual which describes a whole room, relative to the heater's capacity, as 16' x 16' with an 8' ceiling. These dimensions work out to 256 sq. ft. and 2048 cu. ft. respectively - easily the size of most family rooms, kitchens, or living/dining spaces.

Over the last year a major shift in space heater technology has re-shaped consumers' taste in whole room space heaters. Among the winners are those that employ ceramic or quartz infrared heating elements.

Among whole room heater manufacturers, Lasko holds the number two spot for bestselling heaters with its model 755320 tower heater with digital display (). (Number one is Lasko's 754200 compact heater ).

Ceramic heaters have gained wide spread popularity for a number of good reasons. One is reliability. Speaking from personal experience, our Lasko 5141, no longer available, refuses to give up the ghost after 6 or 7 birthdays - or approximately 52.4 space heater years.

A few more reasons behind the popularity of ceramics for heating are quick heat-up and safe operation. Ceramic heaters are also relatively quiet and produce an even heat which is often described as "soft."

Radiator Space Heaters
A radiator will always be a radiator so there isn't much you can do with it. Despite the lack of any game changing technology, the radiator type heater remains one of the safest. Among radiator heater makers, Delonghi dominates the market with its model D0715T Safe Heat Oil-Filled Radiator ().

Micathermic Heaters
Micathermic heaters are basically radiator heaters enclosed by mica panels for enhanced heat distribution. Since they depend on convection for heat distribution they are fan-less and noise-free. Designed for versatility, they can be mounted on casters or hung on a wall, and are said to be a good bathroom heater - which I don't recommend for any portable electric heater.

Once all the rage, micathermic heaters have all but fallen by the wayside. Maybe it had something to do with a customer complaining about sparks shooting from his DeLonghi HHP1500 Mica Panel Radiator. So it's interesting to note that the Kenwood HHP 1500, also made by Delonghi and strongly resembling the original, is one of Consumer Reports' highest rated heaters.

However, all is not lost. The Bionaire BH3950-U micathermic heater () rates 4 out of 5 stars from its users for silent operation, portability, and whole room, non-drying heat.

Convection Heaters With Fans
Fan-forced convection heat is the M.O. of most whole room space heaters. The top rated heater makers in this category are Lasko and Delonghi, mentioned previously, along with Holmes, Honeywell, and Vornado.

New from Vornado this heating season is the PVH, or Panel Vortex Heater (). This heater is a departure both in price and design from Vornado's most popular heater, the round cornered EH1-0034-06 AVH2 Vortex Full-Room Electric Heater (). The new, easy to operate flat panel design houses the same technology used in their more expensive models.

The secret to harnessing Vornado's vortex of heat is to locate the heater at one end of the room with a clear path to the opposite wall. When the air hits the opposing wall it splits and is deflected back around the perimeter of the room to heat every square inch of space.

From Holmes, sold under the Patton brand name, is the new PQH307-UM Tower Quartz Heater with Adjustable Thermostat (). This fan equipped unit is on the smaller end (150 sq. ft.) of whole room heaters and offers two heat settings corresponding to the number of quartz tubes turned on.

This year Honeywell has the distinction of a recommendation from Consumer Reports for its model HZ-817 Electric Convection Heater (). The 30" long, baseboard type heater has no fan and relies solely on convection for heat distribution.

Unfortunately, this heater is a victim of its own success and is either unavailable, back ordered, or sold at highly inflated prices resulting from scarce supply. Kaz USA Inc., the manufacturer of Honeywell, is aware of the problem and suggests the HZ-617 Whole Room 2-in-1 Heater () as an alternative. The main difference is the addition of a fan to the HZ-617 which can be turned on or off at your pleasure.

Without a doubt, the biggest shift in consumer preferences for electric space heaters has been to furniture style quartz infrared heaters. The introduction of EdenPure a few years ago was followed by an onslaught of competing makes and models.

Infrared Quartz Heaters
The newest of these is the Dr Heater infrared heater. Dr Heater features a dual quartz/ceramic heating system, gets food reviews, and costs 0 - 0 less than its competitors.

Finding the best whole room space heater is easy once you know the size of the space you want to heat, how fast you want it heated (heaters w/fans are 3x faster), and your budget.
